Remembrance isn’t just for the dead,
there is a time to remember the living
the part that those still here have played in our lives,
the strides that they have made on our behalf.
Not just the inventions, the developments, or the art.
The work that makes the world a better place,
that might lead to a patent, a cure, or an award.
These things are important, but not the whole.
We should remember the kind words in the night,
and the cool cloth when we run a fever.
Remember the food put on the table for us, the clean clothes,
the arms wrapped around in comfort in the darkest hours.
These are the everyday gifts we receive without agenda,
from those who care about us even when we don’t care back,
even when it isn’t always deserved, and forgotten in an instant,
because that’s what women do, they give selflessly.
As this month of remembrance of women draws to a close,
remember that what they give isn’t just for a day or a month,
they turn up every day, when the sun shines, and when it doesn’t.
So, show your appreciation in the same way, while they live.
